Program Notes
Flutes from the Other Side was originally written in honor of Halloween for my student ensemble Pam's Pipers. The title is a pun. During the piece, the flutists turn their flues around and play from the other side 'backwards'. This way, the tone sounds airy and eerie and rather ghostly too especially when we hum into the flutes simultaneously. Nevermind my sense of humor. The tempo is marked Grave (very slow). At the end of piece, the player is directed to Return to the Grave (I love terrible puns) so you can get a sense of Halloween and my dark yet playful (another pun) humor ...plus Rod Serling's wonderfully dark, eerie & prophetic sense of humor.
